Three communicating tanks containing water

Information

Three tanks are connected in a line by hoses. The two tanks at the ends have larger cross sections, the one in the middle is narrower. Initially, the water levels in the tanks are different (high on the left, low in the middle, intermediate on the right). Both hoses are opended at the same time to allow the water to flow.
It is observed that the level in the large tank on the left decreases until all three levels have become equal. The level in the small tank at the center increases, whereas the height of the water column on the right first decreases and then increases.
