1 | Equilibration of temperatures |
Description | Hot water is poured into one of two compartments of a well insulated container. Cold water is poured into the other part separated only by a thin metal wall. A magnetic stirrer is used to make sure the water is always well mixed in both parts. The temperatures of the water in the two compartments are recorded. In a second experiment, a cold copper cylinder is immersed in hot water. The temperatures of water and of copper are recorded as functions of time. |

3 | Air thermometer and the Kelvin temperature scale |
Description | Air in a glass bulb is heated in a glycol bath. If the temperature of the liquid is changed slowly, the temperature of the air is virtually equal to the temperature of the glycol at all times. The temperature of the glycol bath is monitored. The glass bulb is connected to a mercury pressure gauge which is adjusted to make sure that the volume of the air in the bulb stays constant. The levels of mercury are measured for given temperatures of the bath. |

4 | Power of a thermoelectric generator |
Description | A Peltier device (a thermoelectric generator or heat pump) is placed between two bodies of water at different temperatures. A resistor is connected to the terminals of the device. Temperatures of the two bodies of water and the voltage across the resistor are measured as functions of time (as the hot water cools and the cold water gets warmer). |
